Managing Exam Timetables in Google Calendar

WipeAway Guides·4 min read·Updated July 2026

Exam timetables are one of the most heavily-used shared calendars in any school or college. During exam season, staff, students, and parents all depend on them. After results day, they become redundant — but they still sit in the calendar, cluttering the view for everyone who has access.

This guide explains how to manage exam timetable calendars effectively and clear them cleanly after each exam cycle.

Setting up an exam timetable calendar

The cleanest approach is to use a dedicated calendar for each exam session (e.g. "Summer 2026 Exams") rather than adding exam events to a general school calendar. This makes it easy to share with specific groups, control visibility, and clear at the end of the cycle without affecting other events.

  • Create a new calendar for each exam series in Google Calendar
  • Share it with the appropriate staff and student groups
  • Import exam schedule data from your MIS or exam board directly into this calendar

After exams: clearing the timetable calendar

Once the exam cycle is complete and results have been issued, the exam calendar events can be removed. You have two options:

Option 1: Delete the calendar entirely

If the exam calendar was created specifically for that session and has no ongoing value, deleting it is straightforward. In Google Calendar, click the three dots next to the calendar → Settings and sharing → Delete this calendar.

This is appropriate for one-off seasonal exam calendars with no integrations and no need to preserve the sharing structure.

Option 2: Clear the events, keep the calendar

If you use the same exam calendar year after year and want to preserve its sharing permissions and any integrations, use WipeAway to remove only the events. Set a cut-off date after results day, clear everything before it, and the calendar is clean and ready for next year's exam events to be loaded.

This approach is preferable when the calendar is shared with governors, parents, or external bodies who are subscribed and would lose access if the calendar were deleted and recreated.

Timing: Wait until after results day and any re-mark or appeal periods before clearing exam timetable calendars. Some staff may still reference exam dates during these administrative periods.

Bulk clearing after a large exam series

If your school runs multiple exam calendars simultaneously (GCSEs, A-levels, vocational qualifications, internal assessments), WipeAway can clear all of them in a single session by selecting multiple calendars at once. Set one cut-off date and process them all together.
