Cleaning Google Calendars After a Workspace Migration — IT Guide

WipeAway Guides·5 min read·Updated July 2026

A Google Workspace migration moves users, email, files, and calendar data from one environment to another. Once the migration is complete, IT teams commonly find that calendar data requires additional clean-up — duplicate events, historical entries that migrated unnecessarily, or residual data from accounts that no longer exist in the new environment.

Common post-migration calendar issues

  • Duplicate events: Events that existed in both the source and target environments during a cutover window can end up duplicated in the migrated calendars
  • Orphaned events: Events created by user accounts that no longer exist in the new domain appear without an owner in shared calendars
  • Excessive historical data: The migration tool transferred all calendar history going back years, when only recent data was needed in the new environment
  • Test events: Events created during UAT and testing phases that were accidentally included in the production migration

Recommended IT clean-up process

Step 1: Audit affected calendars

Before cleaning anything, identify which calendars have issues and what type of issue each has. Create a list of affected calendars, the nature of the problem, and the date range affected.

Step 2: Determine the clean-up approach for each calendar

  • For calendars with duplicates in a known date range: clear that date range and re-import from the source
  • For calendars with excessive historical data: set a cut-off date that retains only the relevant period
  • For calendars with test data: clear the specific date range that contains test events

Step 3: Execute using WipeAway

Sign into wipeaway.app with a Workspace admin account that has edit access to the affected calendars. Select the calendars, set the appropriate cut-off date for each batch, review the event counts, and confirm.

Step 4: Verify and document

After each batch, verify the results and document what was cleaned, when, and why. Add this to your migration project documentation.

For large-scale post-migration clean-up, WipeAway's Organisation licence includes dedicated support for exactly this scenario. Contact us before starting to discuss the most efficient approach for your environment.

Re-importing clean data

If you cleared a date range that contained good data (to remove duplicates), you will need to re-import from the source system. Export the relevant date range from the source calendar as an ICS file, then import it into Google Calendar via Settings → Import & Export → Import. Verify the result matches the expected clean state before closing the clean-up project.
